 Cheap Software :

Free and cheap software licenses are available for many software packages including Microsoft. Microsoft software licenses are available at concession rates to groups including students.

Free and cheap alternatives to Microsoft operating systems and software include variants of the Linux operating system. Linux operating system is developed and distributed under the GNU general public license, which allows the software and source code to be freely distributed, although some organisations and software developers charge for manuals etc.

Linux’s functionality, adapatbility and robustness (added to the fact that it is free and open source) has made it the main alternative to Microsoft and UNIX. IBM and Hewlett Packard, amongst other computer giants, have embraced Linux and support its ongoing development.

If you fancy a play with Linux you can download a complete version of the operating system with some utilities from knoppix This can be burned to CD, and run live from your CD drive. It is an excellent introduction to Linux and doesnt require that you install anything on your PC. Read more at Linux.org

OpenOffice is an open source, free Microsoft Office compatable software package. It is multi platform, and can be used with Microsoft operating systems and linux. It is also available with support for many different languages. Read more at OpenOffice.org

Cheap and free software can be found on magazine cover disks. I have found that generally magazines give away two or three full license programs with each issue, and the value of these programs can be quite high. For example, I am using NetObjects Fusion MX to code this website, it is a competent, fairly well-spec'd HTML editor, the price of the license being $159, but I got it free on a cover disk.

The same cover disk also had CSE HTML validator 4.52 ($178), The Logo Creator v3.5 ($97), and Xara Webstyle 2 ($96). That is a total of $530 of software licenses for the price of a magazine. Generally, the software is not the latest version and you will be encouraged to upgrade (and hence spend cash) but you dont have to.

Magazine cover disks can also be a great help to those of us without a super-duper broadband connection, as they contain the latest versions of popular software such as browsers, acrobat readers and zip software, which can save time and money spent on downloads.
