Electronics : Hauppauge 1178 WinTV-HVR-1600 Internal Hybrid TV Tuner/Video Recorder |
|
Rating: - A very poor tuner for standard-def analog video
I own the WinTV-HVR-1800, the PCI Express version this card. For both cards, the recording quality for standard-definition video is very, very poor compared to previous Hauppauge tuners I've owned (like the WinTV-PVR-500, which unfortunately I sold too quickly).
Additionally, its ClearQAM recording capabilities do not work with Media Center, which effectively means that the feature does not exist.
I would not recommend this card to anyone.
Rating: - Good product, good value, software is clunky
I bought this to add tv tuner capabilities to my desktop workstation. It works quite well for watching and pausing live tv. The software for viewing, planning, and storing automated recordings is quite clunky and awkward to use. My suggestion: Try http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10053173-1.html?tag=TOCcarouselArea.0 when it is available. It is packaged with a nearly identical Hauppauge tuner card, or you can use your own card and just buy the software.
Rating: - TV card not performing as expected
I installed the Hauppauge 1178 WinTV-HVR-1600 Internal Hybrid TV Tuner/Video Recorder in my Windows 64 bit Vista machine and it only works PART OF THE TIME. It works fine at times, but other times the signal is broken up and lots of pieces come up missing. I've tried EVERYTHING TO FIX the problem only to wind up in defeat. I wish I had gone another route. In all fairness, the company did offer to refund my money (or exchange it whatever) but I kept it and tried some more tricks, only to wind up again with the same mess from time to time. Oh well, live and learn. Works great WHEN IT WORKS.
Rating: - The Record feature doesn't work in Vista
Beware buying any Hauppauge product for Windows Vista. Everything works except for Record, which crashes. The hardware may be good, but the software/driver seems to have been an afterthought.
Rating: - A good idea
I installed this device into a airly powerful desktop with plenty of RAM and a 256 Mb Video card. The images were ok, a little jerky, but not really watchable. This may, however, be more user error than hardware quality...
