I have owned 3 Toshiba laptops, this being the 3rd and the last, I got it on chirstmas 2004 or 05. It was a complete mess from day 1.
First, within a couple of weeks it started to shutdown without notice, I found out this was because of the heatsink getting clogged up with dirt, so I started cleaning it up about once a month. This would take up basically an entire morning as I had to disassemble and assemble the so called laptop to do this. This worked to a point, as it would shut down no matter what if I tried to burn a DVD.
Very soon it also started to shut down no matter what I was doing, so to use it, just so it would stay on I would put it on a flat surface, and put something under it to raise it and let the bottom air out. This worked for normal functions, but if I wanted to burn a DVD I also had to put it directly in front of the Air conditioner, and turn it on.
Everything that was good about this laptop was negated by this problem which made the very act of using it a complex operation.
2nd problem, it will switch to battery power even if it's connected. I've had to take it for repair 3 or 4 times already on this issue.
Bottom line, this was a complete waste of money, and I will never purchase anything from Toshiba again.
Rating:  - TOSHIBA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS FAULTY NOTEBOOK!!
I bought this computer for a little over $1,000 in Dec '04 and it worked very well for a while. The screen is crystal clear and it came with a lot of great features. However, after I had it for about 9 months, it started shutting down from overheating. If I run any type of memory intensive program like the CD burner or if I run more than three programs at once (itunes, internet explorer, and microsoft word), the computer will automatically shut down. I used canned air to blow out the fans and lots of dust came out, which solved the problem for a week or so, but it eventually started right back up again. After doing some research on the internet, I found that someone had filed a class action lawsuit against Toshiba for this faulty laptop and won. So now Toshiba extended the warranty to 7 November 2007. If you have an A75 that is faulty, you can still send it in even if your initial warranty is expired. I'm going to send mine in this week to see if it's actually fixable. If not, I'll have to buy another notebook and it definitely won't be a Toshiba! Good luck to those with the same problems!

It has been such a huge headache owning this Toshiba Satellite A75-S229, with defects one right after the other. When I first got it, the CD/DVD writer would not work due to a defective optic laser in the drive. Second, 10 months after I got it, the system would shut down by itself without any apparent reason. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I found out from an outside technician that this was due to overheating caused by dust particles getting lodged into the motherboard. However, the Toshiba customer service reps would not admit that.
There are thousands of customers that have had and continue to have problems with the Satellite A75-S229. I would never, ever by another Toshiba. And I would never wish this product on anyone. If there is a Toshiba support group out there trying to learn to cope with living with this product, please let me know.

There is a "well known" overheating problem on this model and several others made by Toshiba. You may as well kiss your money goodbye if you buy this product. There have been several lawsuits over this and other similiar Toshiba models! They know the problem and "WILL NOT" do anything to fix it. I wouldnt pay 5$ for one of these things. I kissed 1,400$ goodbye. One year and it was DONE! Do the research and you will see how many others did the same! STAY AWAY!!!!

Very powerful computer. Toshiba is probably one of the best brands of notebooks. It was a great deal, the price was low, because it was an "open box". The most unbelievable, it arrived in just ONE day. and I've choosen standart shipment ( I guess the seller was Express Solutions).
