Electronics : Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem |

Rating: - Cable modem
This is an excellent product for the Macintosh: absolutely perfect plug-and-play! You take it out of the box, connect it via ethernet, and you're good to go. Unless you're an absolute newk, there's no need to RTFM, even though, for the Mac user, the manual consists entirely of a couple of pictures. Also, for the Mac user, it's a reasonably good example of industrial design. It's great for use with the Apple AirPort SOHO / home-networking system. Moreover, for the Windows (attempting to be) user, the packaging shows the Windows ensign over the words, "Designed for Microsoft Windows ..." and contains the necessary cabling, plus a CD with a manual to supplement the picture-manual and a selection of drivers, of which more are available from the Linksys site. Linksys also sells the necessary internal piping, if it's not already built into your PC. For the price, this modem is an absolute steal.

This modem works extremely reliably once set up. It does it's job, period. Negatives are that you don't know what version you are buying until you receive it (I ended up getting version 4 with the 3 internet lights), lack of support or documentation for Apple/Mac users, and risk of overheating. I like that it looks similar to and is completely stackable with most Linksys wireless routers, reducing the multiple electronics eye-sore factor. However, stacking the units increases the risk of over heating because the feet are not high enough to proprerly separate the units (can be avoided by using pushing thumbtacks through the feet).
FYI: My cable provider's (Comcast) CSRs follow a set-up script for this specific model. Everything went well until the final step. No matter what they tried, their system could not recognize or communicate with this modem. The CSR, not having any technical training and whose expertise was limited to the script, finally gave up and said that they had to send a technician out to finish the set up. After hanging up, I tried fiddling aroung with different things and figured out that the setup could not be completed in FireFox. I switched to a different browser (can't recall if it was Safari or IE) and everything worked perfectly.

Following the instructions provided I had no trouble connecting the cable modem and working with my local cable provider was quick and easy. I'm very pleased with my decision to purchase and install the Linksys cable modem.
Rating: - Insanely great product
Purchased mine about 5-6 years ago. Still works like a charm. I have ver 2 and have not experienced any issues at all. I have it stacked with WRT54GL wireless router and BEFSR81 router and have premium internet service so as you can imagine this product is under heavy usage nearly around the clock. 6 computers wired in, 3 wireless, nintendo ds, xbox, 2 voip phones (lingo/vonage), and accasional repair systems I get. I'll be upgrading the befsr81 to a recently bought cisco 24 port switch. I've had a bit of issue with the 8 port befsr81 router that requires a power cycle but my WRT54GL router and BEFCMU10 v2 modem have been great.
