I just bought the Canoscan 5600f. Took it home, followed the quick install instructions, and it's all hooked up.
First, let me clear up some inaccuracies:
1. The scanner box has a label on it that says "don't forget to buy a USB cable because it's not included!" But actually a USB cable DID come with mine. Admittedly, I can't compare this scanner to any other standalong scanner (such as the Canon 8800) because I've never used the 8800, but I can compare this with the scanners that are part of fax machines or all-in-one printers. This is far superior in scan quality, convenience and speed. I also like the ability to expand the cover hinge to accommodate books. The OCR works well, too.

If you have in mind the scanning of documents into text files that can be edited, forget about Canon. According to their tech support, Canon doesn't include OCR into text files on any of their scanners. I've shipped the CanoScan 5600F back to Amazon for a refund and will look for another manufacturer for the kind of scanner I need. This is a huge disappointment: OCR to text files has been around for 25 years, has improved over time, and it ought to be a standard on any and all scanners. Anyone who's ... Read More
