We bought these based on the 20 mile range for a recent move. They were really helpful for chatting while on the road.
The drawback is that I have no idea where the ideal conditions really work. We tried these out in FL (very flat) at just a few miles and they didn't work. Since the grocery store locally is just a couple of miles away and my wife has a pay as you go cell phone, we had hoped these would replace day to day cell phone use, but so far no such luck. The Motorola T9680RSAME IS POWERFUL, CLEAR, AND IT FUNCTIONS AS ADVETISED ON A NON MOUNTAINOUS AREA. That is what I purchased them for.

I bought 8 of these for our school to use for communication. The range is great, but they lack quality speakers. It is very difficult to understand the person speaking.
