Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Definitely recommend for students or other users that need portability
I was sort of forced into buying this particular drive because I really wanted a decent sized drive with firewire 800 capability and this seemed like the only one available. So far, it's been working great, both as a time machine backup system and a scratch disk for my Adobe programs. I wiped the Lacie default software and disk image, so I can't really review its right-out-of-the-boxness, but I will say it's fast, quiet, cool compact, sturdy, and it works. The -1 star is only because the only rubber ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Compact, Capacious, Fast: A Great External Drive for Work on the Go
I'm using this drive as a replacement for a full-size external 500 GB drive and it's excellent! I take this drive everywhere I take my laptop, and the small size and weight and lack of bulky power brick make it MUCH MUCH easier to pack up and tote around. With FireWire and the transfer rate of the 500 GB SATA drive mechanism, I don't notice any performance difference between this and the 3.5" mechanism I was using previously -- something which was definitely not true of the 160 GB USB mobile drive that ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lacie 250GB Rugged H-drive
I haven't put it under extensive use but so far it seems to be very rugged and has performed flawlessly backing up a pc laptop. The extra ports are great and give faster options. I would definitely use this as a direct to disk option using a laptop and firewire video camera. It also runs great off of bus power using any of the available ports. I would highly recommend this drive.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It works as it should
I have had the drive for for less than one week but on day one I copied 100 GB of video files to the drive. It was quick using the FireWire 800 cable. The drive seems to be very sturdy and well built. I like it much better than the Western Digital Passport drives that I have used in the past. I have had 3 out of 5 WD drives fail. I hope that this one will give me better results.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good Device
This is based off of my experience with a 250 GB version.
It worked well for a long time. It is rugged.

One problem: the USB input on the drive itself became loose and eventually just fell off inside.

Bought a replacement shell to fix the problem, but for something so "rugged" it sure did have a weak USB connection to the silicon board inside.

Maybe they fixed it in this version!
