Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simple, reasonable, works just fine.
I recently had "Leopard" installed on my iMac G5 and needed an external hard drive for the "Time Machine" feature to work more effectively.. My Mac consultant suggested the Western Digital as simple and sufficient for my needs. I bought it, installed it myself and am very pleased with its performance. And Amazon was "amazin'" as usual. Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Terrible enclosure, good hard drive
I primarily got this to use as an eSata drive, and as an external eSata drive, it is absolutely terrible. For whatever reason, as others have mentioned, this drive periodically goes to 'sleep', and can thus disappear from Windows. The only way to bring it back is to restart. For that fact alone this drive should be avoided.

My only disclaimer is: the hard drive inside of this inferior enclosure is of normal WD quality (pretty good to great). If you have the know-how, open up the ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Confused
After I purchased Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition (500GB) external hard drive, I went to check whether it had actually backed up my data using Apple's Time Machine. When I tried to open any application from the external hard drive I got error code -10657. I called Western Digital and they said it was probably saving your data. I was uncomfortable with that response and I sent it back. I bought another hard drive (G Drive Q 500GB) and am getting the same error code. I am feeling that ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Easy on MAC....easy on PC
Its create, at home we have both MAC an PC, and it works create for both with out making partitions or give new format to the drive. How? We connected to our wireless network (Airport Extreme Base Station) via USB and it can be written for both systems.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Silent drive
Unlike some of the other My Books and despite saying on the box that it's XP/2000/vista ready, the studio is only plug and play on the Mac. Plug it directly in to a PC and it will not show up as a drive - but it will show in your hardware device listing perfectly fine. All you need to do is reformat it for 2000 or XP or NTFS or whathave you. This is really my only complaint as it takes a bit of time to format a 500 GB (real world 465.76 GB) drive.

Pros: Really silent and free of any ... Read More
