I bought the speakers knowing that they will not blow me away like a good pair of headphones or powered speakers. Sometimes I just don't feel like wearing headphones. Powered speakers are too big and heavy to carry around everywhere you go. I just toss these in my laptop bag and they go where ever I go. The speaker does not have any extra cords that you need to carry around. The cord that it does have is the USB cable that stores in a rear compartment. Genius is nice enough to even include ... My IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad (several years old) was not able to produce audible audio from the YouTube videos I'd uploaded and I was looking for a very portable way to amplify the sound.

Bought this for use with my monitor at the office. Wanted a small speaker system that did not require wires or cables. My CPU is behind the credenza and I use a long ( 8') black cable enclosure to hide all the wires.
Sound is ok, not great, but good. I need it only for video conferencing or listening to news streaming on the web.
There is no volume control on the speakers, but they fit up under my monitor just fine and do not take up desk space.

This is a great speaker system to bypass your poochy laptop speakers. Don't expect concert-level volume, but it's plenty loud enough to watch movies or listen to music, and the fact that it runs off of th USB port is a big convenience.
