I found getting 5.1 surround sound out of my computer and into my AV receiver to be a difficult process. I needed to go USB out to SPDIF in on the receiver. I was never able to get this device to work. I've returned it and bought a Creative Soundblaster Live which works great.
My theory as to the problem is this: according to Creative, the analog output must be 5.1 channel, and it must be disabled for the digital passthrough to work. The Soundblaster has its own control panel in ... Read More

This product is useful if you wish to connect your laptop to your home audio system. The USB/optical interface eliminates the need of utilizing the 3.5mm mini stereo plug audio output common with inexpensive laptop computers. The adapter ships with a Toslink and USB cable, the combined length of which is approximately 3m. Any open USB port may be used. Included is DVD software. With Windows XP the product self-installed.
